Last week members of Years 5 & 6 took part in athletics competitions and there was some fantastic running, jumping and throwing skills on show. They also looked really smart wearing the new Penygawsi school sports kit.
The Year 5 event, which took place in Abercynon was a non competitive but the children manage to practice their skills in readiness for the Year 6 event next year. Some really good skills on display and a competative whole team relay race which saw us pull back a win after some very close second place races.

The Year 6 event was a competitive competition that took place at the Aberdare Sobel centre. The children were absolutely awesome on the running events winning 7 out of 9 races demonstrating superb baton changes, speed stepping and hurdling.
They did really well on the field events too, in particular - the speed bounce. It was very competitive with eight schools all competing for a place in the finals and only two schools progressing through to the finals.
After all the results were collected we were tied joint second on points with Cwmlai Primary School. The decision on who progressed to the final was down to the amount of races one during the running event, which luckily for us was our strongest event and ensured our progress to the finals day after half term. A huge congratulations to the children for this.
A big thank you to the school for providing our new sports t-shirts and for funding the mini bus hire to allow us to travel to the events.
We need to practice our javelin throwing, standing long jumps and medicine ball seated throwing but we are really looking forward to competing in the finals event in March.
